Best Shopify Email Marketing Apps in 2026: Ranked by Store Size, With Real Costs at Scale

Best Shopify email marketing apps in 2026: ranked by store size, with real costs at scale

There is no single best Shopify email marketing app, and the lists that crown one are usually written by an app ranking itself or an affiliate paid to. The honest answer depends on your store size and how you send: Omnisend is the best value for most small and mid stores, Klaviyo earns its premium only once you actually use its data platform, and Shopify's native email app lets a brand-new store start free. But the number that actually decides it is the one nobody publishes neutrally: the real monthly cost as your list grows, and the billing traps hidden under the sticker price. Below we rank the top email and SMS apps by use case from live App Store ratings (July 2026), show the true cost at 1,000, 5,000 and 25,000 contacts side by side, and flag the gotchas, from Klaviyo billing every profile to Postscript's "free" plan that is not. We did not install and hands-on test all of them, and we say so.

The apps look similar on the sticker. The decision hides in what you pay as your list grows, and the billing traps under it.

The verdict, up front Best overall value (most stores): Omnisend (4.8) - full features free, email plus SMS, roughly 35% cheaper than Klaviyo at scale.
Best for scaling, data-driven stores: Klaviyo (4.7) - deepest analytics and flows, if you actually use them; the priciest at scale.
Best free / brand-new store: Shopify Email (native) - 10,000 emails a month free, then $1 per 1,000.
Best SMS-first: Postscript (mid-large) or Recart (done-for-you); enterprise, Attentive.
Cheapest paid: Seguno ($10/mo) or Avada ($16/mo).
The honest caveat: prices below are as of July 2026 and change often; the real cost is at scale, not at the sticker, so read the cost table before you commit.
How we ranked this Rankings are derived from the live Shopify App Store rating and review count for each app (recorded July 2026) plus a read of each vendor's official pricing page. We did not hands-on test every app in a live store, and we do not pretend to. Email and SMS pricing is tier-based and changes often, so confirm the current price on the vendor's calculator before you commit.

First, the one idea that saves you money: per-contact vs per-send

Before any brand names, understand the two pricing models, because picking the wrong one is the most expensive mistake here. Most apps charge per contact (Klaviyo, Omnisend, Mailchimp, Drip): your bill rises with list size whether or not you email those people, which punishes a big dormant list. A few charge per send (Brevo, Shopify Email native): unlimited stored contacts, you pay per email actually sent, which rewards a large list you email infrequently and punishes high-frequency senders. Match the model to your habit and you can cut the bill in half before you even compare features.

The real cost at scale (the number nobody publishes neutrally)

Here is where the apps actually separate, and where vendor blogs go quiet. These are approximate email-only monthly costs as your list grows, so you can see the curve, not just the entry price. Klaviyo is the priciest at scale; Omnisend runs roughly 35% cheaper at 10,000 and the gap widens from there (around a $6,000-a-year difference by 50,000 contacts). Confirm the exact figure on each vendor's live calculator before you commit, since these tiers move.

The billing traps the sticker hides: Klaviyo bills every active profile since February 2025, not just the ones you email. Postscript's "free" Starter needs a roughly $49/mo message minimum, so it is not really free. Brevo's free plan is 300 emails per day, a daily throttle, not a monthly pool. Mailchimp can bill unsubscribed contacts unless you archive them. Omnisend SMS credits expire after 60 days. None of these are dealbreakers, but none are on the pricing page in bold either.

Live rating and review volume, the real free-plan cap, entry price, pricing model, whether it does email or SMS or both, and who owns and funds it. One honesty note on the table below: Mailchimp's 4.8 rating sits on a review count that reset after Mailchimp was pulled from the App Store in a 2019 dispute, so the headline flatters it; read the notes, not just the stars.

The top picks, in detail

#1 Best overall value
Omnisend
4.8 · ~2,925 reviews · free: 250 contacts full-feature incl. SMS · paid from $16/mo
For most small and mid Shopify stores, Omnisend is the sensible default. Its free plan is unusually generous (full features, including SMS and segmentation, not a stripped trial), the builder is fast to learn, and it runs roughly 35% cheaper than Klaviyo at 10,000 contacts with the gap widening at scale. It bundles email and SMS with global SMS coverage. It is bootstrapped and profitable, so it competes on value rather than a venture land-grab. Unless you specifically need Klaviyo's data platform, start here.

#2 Best for scaling / data-driven
Klaviyo
4.7 · ~2,900 reviews · free: 250 contacts / 500 emails · paid from $20/mo
Klaviyo is the pick once email and SMS drive a serious share of revenue and you will actually use the predictive analytics, granular segmentation and deep abandoned-cart branching that justify the price. It is the most powerful data platform here and the deepest Shopify integration. The honest caveats: it is the priciest at scale, and since February 2025 it bills every active profile, not just the ones you email, so the bill can climb faster than expected. If you are not using the data layer, you are paying for a Ferrari to sit in traffic.

#3 Best free / brand-new store
Shopify Email (native)
4.8 · ~4,002 reviews · free: 10,000 emails/mo · then $1 per 1,000 emails
If you are just starting, the app already built into your admin is hard to beat on price: 10,000 emails a month free, then a flat $1 per 1,000 with no platform fee, and nothing new to install. It does the basics (campaigns, a growing set of automations, basic SMS) well enough to run a new store's whole email program at near-zero cost. You will outgrow its automation depth as you scale, at which point Omnisend or Klaviyo earns the upgrade, but there is no reason to pay a subscription before you need one.

Omnisend vs Klaviyo @10k

~35%cheaper

Omnisend runs about a third cheaper than Klaviyo at 10,000 contacts, and the gap widens at scale.

Shopify Email free tier

10kfree/mo

The native app sends 10,000 emails a month free, then $1 per 1,000, with no platform fee.

Email return on spend

$36per $1

Email marketing returns about $36 per $1 spent (Litmus), which is why the app choice is worth getting right.

The sticker prices look close. At 50,000 contacts the gap between the cheapest and priciest here is about $6,000 a year. Read the cost curve, not the entry price.MerchantStack cost analysis, July 2026

The three things that actually decide it

The model · #1
Per-contact or per-send
Match the pricing model to how you send. A big list emailed rarely wants per-send (Brevo, Shopify Email); a list you email often wants per-contact done cheaply (Omnisend).
The scale · #2
Cost at your list size
Entry prices look alike; the curve does not. Check your real cost at the list size you expect in a year, not today's, before you lock in.
The platform · #3
Will you use the data?
Klaviyo's premium only pays off if you use its analytics and segmentation. If not, Omnisend does 90% of the job for less.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free Shopify email app? Shopify's native Email app for brand-new stores (10,000 emails a month free), or Omnisend if you want a fuller feature set free (250 contacts, including SMS). See our best free email app guide.

Klaviyo or Omnisend? Omnisend for value and simplicity; Klaviyo when you will actually use its data platform at scale. Full breakdown in Klaviyo vs Omnisend.

Do I really need Klaviyo? Often not, until email drives a meaningful share of revenue and you use predictive segmentation. See do you need Klaviyo?

Is Mailchimp good for Shopify? It works again since 2021, but it is not ecommerce-native and its high App Store rating sits on a review count that reset after a 2019 removal. For a Shopify store, Omnisend or Klaviyo usually fits better.

Bottom line

Skip the self-interested leaderboards. Start free on Shopify's native email app if you are new, move to Omnisend for the best value once you want real automation and SMS, and step up to Klaviyo only when you will genuinely use its data platform at scale. Whatever you pick, decide on the pricing model and your cost at next year's list size, not this month's entry price, and know the billing traps going in. Get those right and the "which app" argument mostly answers itself.
