Best Free Shopify Upsell App in 2026: What 'Free' Actually Means (and the Catch)

Best free Shopify upsell app in 2026: what "free" actually means (and the catch)

Search for a free Shopify upsell app and you will find a dozen listings with a "Free" badge, but most of them are not free the way you think. The word covers three very different deals, and only one of them lets a real, paying store run an upsell at no cost. Some "free" tiers only work on development stores and vanish the moment you go live. Others are genuinely free forever but pay for themselves by putting other brands' ads on your thank-you page, so you are renting your own customer's attention. A few are truly free for a live store, but capped by orders, offers, or a watermark. Below we separate the three, name the catch on each, and rank from live App Store ratings (as of July 2026). We did not hands-on test these apps, and we say so; we also refuse to quote the "+X% AOV" numbers the vendors advertise, because none of them are independently verified.

$0 * truly free (capped) dev-store only ad-revenue share * the asterisk is the whole story
"Free" splits three ways. Only the top band costs you nothing and shows nobody else's ads.
In this guide
The verdict, up front Best genuinely-free for a live store: Selleasy (4.9) - free up to 50 orders a month, full placements, no watermark.
Free forever, with a watermark: In Cart Upsell (4.8) - one offer free, "powered by" badge shown.
Free bundles: Frequently Bought Together (4.9) - three manual bundles at no cost.
Small free tiers: Ultimate Special Offers (10 orders/mo), Honeycomb (100 funnel views/mo).
Free-but-you-pay-another-way: Bold (a percentage of your upsell revenue), and the ad-revenue-share deals (Rokt Thanks via AfterSell, Rebuy Monetize) that pay you to show other brands' ads.
The honest caveat: most "Free" badges are dev-store-only trials; check the tier before you count on it.
How we ranked this Rankings are derived from the live Shopify App Store rating and review count for each app (recorded July 2026) plus a read of each vendor's official pricing page to confirm what the free tier actually includes. We did not hands-on test every app in a live store. We rank on what the free plan really costs you (orders cap, watermark, revenue share, or ads shown), not on advertised revenue-lift claims, because none of those are independently verified. Prices and caps drift; confirm the current tier before you commit.

The three kinds of "free" (this is the whole guide)

Before any ranking, understand what the badge means, because the App Store shows one "Free" pill for three different bargains. Get this right and the choice mostly settles itself.

Kind of "free"What it meansWho it fitsExamples
Truly free (capped)Works on a live store at no cost, limited by orders, offers, or a watermarkNew or low-volume stores testing the waterSelleasy, In Cart Upsell, Frequently Bought Together

Ad-revenue shareFree forever because it pays YOU per order to show other brands' ads to your buyerStores willing to rent post-purchase attentionRokt Thanks (via AfterSell), Rebuy Monetize
Revenue-share "free"Free monthly fee, but the vendor takes a cut of the upsell revenue it earns youStores that prefer a variable cost to a fixed oneBold, CartHook

The shortcut: if you have a live store and want a real upsell at zero cost, start with Selleasy (free up to 50 orders a month, no watermark, no ads). If you only need one offer and do not mind a small "powered by" badge, In Cart Upsell is free forever. Everything else labelled "free" is either a trial that ends, or a deal where the money comes from somewhere else, your revenue or your customer's screen.

The genuinely-free-for-a-real-store picks

#1 Best genuinely-free
Selleasy (Logbase)
4.9 · ~2,442 reviews · free up to 50 orders/mo, then from $9/mo · product + cart + checkout + thank-you
This is the one to start with. Selleasy's free plan works on a live store up to 50 orders a month, with no watermark and no ads, and it covers the widest set of placements of any free option, product page, cart, checkout and thank-you. It carries the Built for Shopify mark and one of the highest ratings and largest review bases in the whole category. For a new or low-volume store, this is a real upsell at genuinely zero cost, and when you cross 50 orders the paid tier at $9 is one of the cheapest serious entries anyway. The only "catch" is the order cap, which is exactly what you want it to be: you only start paying once you are selling enough for it to matter. See the Selleasy App Store listing for current tier details.

#2 Free forever, one offer
In Cart Upsell (ICU)
4.8 · ~547 reviews · free for 1 offer, then from $9.99/mo · in-cart / cart-drawer
If you want an in-cart or cart-drawer upsell and only need a single offer, In Cart Upsell is free forever, with the trade that it shows a "powered by" watermark on the free plan. For one focused nudge, "add this to your cart," that is a fair deal, and removing the watermark plus adding more offers is what the $9.99 paid tier buys. It is the cheapest serious cart-upsell tool, and the watermark is the honest, visible cost rather than a hidden one. If one offer is all you need to test whether cart upsells move anything for your store, this is the no-spend way to find out.

#3 Free bundles
Frequently Bought Together (Code Black Belt)
4.9 · ~1,023 reviews · free for 3 manual bundles, then from $14.99/mo · product-page bundle
The Amazon-style "frequently bought together" widget on the product page, and its free plan lets you run three manually-built bundles at no cost. The catch is in the word "manual": the free tier does not give you the automatic, algorithmic recommendations that are the app's real draw, so you are curating the sets yourself. For a store with a few obvious pairings, that is plenty, and three hand-picked bundles cost nothing. When you want the auto-recommendation engine across your whole catalog, the paid tier at $14.99 unlocks it. A clean, no-cost way to add product-page cross-sells if you are willing to pick the pairs.

Two more have real free tiers, but with tighter limits. Ultimate Special Offers (Orbit, 4.5) is free up to 10 orders a month, then $9 plus roughly 1% usage capped per order, so it is really a "try it on your first ten orders" tier rather than a lasting free plan. Honeycomb Upsell Funnels (Conversion Bear, 4.6) is free up to 100 funnel views a month, and note that is views, not orders, so a store with any real traffic burns through it quickly and the jump to the paid tier at $54.99 is steep. Both are fine for a genuine trial; neither is a place to live for free.

Most "free" upsell apps are trials in disguise, or they pay themselves by showing your customer someone else's ad. Only a capped-but-real free tier costs you nothing and rents out nothing.MerchantStack ranking method

The "free-but-you-pay-another-way" apps

Some apps carry no monthly fee, or offer to pay you, and that money has to come from somewhere. It is not wrong, but it should be a choice you make on purpose, not a surprise you find later.

!

Two ways "free" gets paid for: First, revenue share. Bold (4.4) has a free Standard plan, but takes a percentage of the upsell revenue it generates, about 3.5% on the free tier and 2.5% on paid, so a winning campaign quietly raises your bill; CartHook works similarly with a per-order percentage. Second, ad-revenue share. AfterSell's Rokt Thanks feature and Rebuy's Monetize feature pay you per order (Rokt Thanks up to about $0.80 an order, Rebuy Monetize about $0.20 to $0.35) to display other brands' ads on your thank-you page. That is real money, but you are renting your own customer's post-purchase attention to advertisers, sometimes right next to your own upsell. Know which bargain you are signing.

Why so many "free" apps are dev-store only

The most common trap is the "Free" badge on an app whose free plan only works on a Shopify development store, the sandbox you build in before launch, or is really a time-limited trial. ReConvert, AfterSell, UpCart, Candy Rack and Wide Bundles all show a free or free-to-install option that is not a standing free tier for a live, selling store; billing begins when you go live or when the trial ends. There is nothing dishonest about a free trial, but it is not the same as "free," and a listing badge does not distinguish them. Always open the pricing tab and read whether the free plan says "development stores" or carries a trial length. If it does, treat it as a paid app you get to try, and check our cheapest upsell apps guide for the lowest real monthly cost.

One more thing to check on any free checkout app

If a free app puts an offer inside the checkout itself, it now has to be built on Shopify's checkout extensibility (checkout UI extensions), because Shopify retired the old checkout.liquid customization. The dates are real: the deadline to upgrade thank-you and order-status pages was August 28, 2025, and from January 2026 Shopify began automatic upgrades that strip any customization still using the old additional scripts or script-tag apps on those pages (Shopify checkout upgrade guide). Native in-checkout upsell also remains a Shopify Plus feature, so on a standard plan your free options are post-purchase, cart and product-page placements, which is exactly where the genuinely-free tiers above operate. For the full picture see Shopify's own checkout extensibility overview and the checkout UI extensions developer docs, or our main upsell app roundup for how this shakes out across the paid field.

The three things that actually decide it

The free reality · #1
Live store or dev only?
Open the pricing tab. If the free plan says "development stores" or shows a trial length, it is not free for a real store. Selleasy and In Cart Upsell are.
The catch · #2
Cap, watermark, or ads?
Truly-free tiers are capped by orders or offers, or show a watermark. "Free forever" apps often pay themselves by putting other brands' ads on your page.
The evidence · #3
Ignore the lift claim
No advertised "+X% AOV" is verified. Run a free tier, measure your own attributed AOV over a few weeks, and only pay to upgrade if the number is real for you.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best genuinely free Shopify upsell app? Selleasy. Its free plan works on a live store up to 50 orders a month, with no watermark and no ads, and covers product, cart, checkout and thank-you placements. In Cart Upsell is free forever for a single offer if you accept a "powered by" watermark.

Are "free" upsell apps really free? Often not. Many "Free" badges are dev-store-only plans or time-limited trials that start billing when you go live. Others are free because they pay you to show other brands' ads on your thank-you page (Rokt Thanks, Rebuy Monetize), or they take a percentage of the upsell revenue they generate (Bold, CartHook). Always read the pricing tab.

Can I run a post-purchase upsell for free? On a standard plan the free route is usually a small capped tier or a trial; genuinely free post-purchase offers are rare because the best post-purchase apps are dev-store-only or paid. See best post-purchase upsell apps.

What is the cheapest paid upsell app when I outgrow free? ReConvert at $4.99/mo and Selleasy at $9/mo are among the cheapest serious entries. See cheapest upsell apps.

Bottom line

"Free" is three different bargains wearing one badge. For a live store that wants a real upsell at zero cost, start with Selleasy (free to 50 orders a month) or In Cart Upsell (free for one offer, with a watermark), and use Frequently Bought Together for a few no-cost product-page bundles. Treat any "free" plan that only works on development stores as a paid app you get to trial, and go in clear-eyed about the apps that pay themselves by taking a slice of your revenue or renting your thank-you page to advertisers. Whatever you run, ignore the advertised lift numbers, measure your own attributed AOV, and only pay to upgrade once the free tier has proven the offer works.
